Plowing the Past; Early 1900’s Farm Implements Are Intertwined With Market Building’s History

By Paula Carpenter

Several pieces of farm equipment dating back to the early 1900’s are on display in front of the Rising Star Market Building. Owner, Jo Sledge, said that she has been collecting the equipment for several years. “The early day history of local farming and this building are somewhat intertwined. Construction of the building began in 1938 and was completed in 1940. Originally, it was used as a City Market where farm produce of all kinds was sold, and many livestock shows were also held here. After I was able to purchase the building, I knew I wanted to buy some farm implements that reflected the history of the Market Building,” she explained.
