Payton Scott, 77, passed away Sunday, December 14, 2014 at the Rising Star Nursing Center after a brief illness. Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Rising Star, Texas, officiating will be JoLynn Davis, Pastor. Interment will be at the Romney Cemetery north of Rising Star. Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains, Texas is in charge of arrangements.  

Born August 18, 1937, in Merkel, Texas, Payton was the son of A.D and Mabel Butman Scott. He graduated from Merkel High School in 1955, attended San Angelo College before earning his Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in Animal Husbandry. From there, he attended the University of Wyoming and later received his Master’s degree from Kansas State University.

On August 1, 1959, he married Johnnie Tipton in Merkel. Payton worked as a ranch manager, a feedlot manager, a County Extension Agent for the Texas Extension Service and was the owner of Sculpture Cattle Company. He was a long time rancher/farmer in Eastland County. The Scott’s held an annual club calf sale for 30 years.

Payton was a founding director of the Texas Club Calf Association, president/director of the Texas Limousin Association and a director of the North American Limousin Foundation. He served as a director and president of the North Texas Farmers Market Association. Payton was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Rising Star.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Barry, and one grandson. Payton is survived by his wife, Johnnie, and three children: Theresa and husband, Lee of Bells, Texas; Neil and wife, Kathy of College Station, Texas; Sam and wife, Tonya of Cisco. Also, surviving are ten grandchildren, brother, David Scott and sister, Aleta Alexander of Merkel and many nieces and nephews.

 

Pallbearers will be Robert Gorr, Garrett Gerhardt and Brian Bailey, all of Cisco, Tod Herring of Rising Star, Jim Moylan, Jr. of Eastland, and David Schrock of Sulphur, Oklahoma.
