Mavericks Begin Watkins Era With A 45-12 Win Over Merkel

Gosnell, Majors, and Forbus lead early offensive explosion

The Eastland Mavericks came out of the chute firing and cruised to an easy win over the Merkel Badgers on the road as they got the 2014 football season under way. Under new Head Coach and Athletic Director Cliff Watkins, Eastland continued their winning ways and did so with several new faces on the field and on the sidelines. Eastland was paced offensively by Junior quarterback Josh Gosnell who completed 17 of 20 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns and added an additional 37 yards on the ground on just five carries and added three touchdowns giving him five on the night for the first year quarterback fresh off of leading the Maverick 7 on 7 team as far as they have ever gotten in the state 7 on 7 tourney. Gosnell connected with eight different receivers on the night.
