Over Sixty Years and Still Cool

By Paula Carpenter

When newlyweds Billy and Norma Carpenter bought their first refrigerator in 1952, they hoped that it would last them a very long time, and so far the little fridge has not disappointed them. It has been in continuous use for over 60 years and is still keeping the frozen stuff frozen and the cool stuff cool. Dr. Carpenter said that shortly after he and Norma married they were living in Ft. Worth and went to Montgomery Wards to shop for some furniture. “We bought a table and chairs, a bedroom suit and this refrigerator. I was really nervous about buying all this stuff cause it cost about $800, and that was the first time in my life I had ever charged anything,” Dr. Carpenter said.
