Harvel Roy Stambaugh, age 92, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015 at his home in Cross Cut. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11th at the First Baptist Church with Ronnie White officiating and assisted by Burlie Taylor; burial was in Cross Cut Cemetery. Roy was born on July 30, 1922 in Kress (Swisher County), Texas to Roy Herbert and Willie Mae (Bramlet) Stambaugh. On August 14, 1945, Roy and Mable Marie Baucom of Cross Cut were married in Wingate, Texas, she preceded him in death on November 7, 2011. Roy enlisted in the National Guard on September 27, 1939, and then was in active duty with the 1st Battalion Service Battery, 131st Field Artillery, 36th Infantry Division from November 19, 1940 until he was discharged on September 27, 1945. He served in the European Theatre in Italy, France, Africa, and Germany from September 9, 1943 through May 8, 1945. He received the Bronze Medal, the EAME Service Medal, the American Defense Service Metal, and the Good Conduct Metal. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Roy worked for Rudco Oil Company, Rising Star, until it closed in 1965 and then worked for 3M Company in Brownwood until his retirement in 1987. Roy was a member of First Baptist Church of Cross Plains as well as a deacon in good standing. He was also a member of the Kiwanis and Masons in addition to serving on the Cross Cut Cemetery Board. Survivors include his nieces and their spouses: Donna and Bob Robillard, Lawton, OK; Janna and Dr. Derrell Monday, Vernon; Kim and Dean Hinton, Wichita Falls; and Paula and Michael Beard, Amarillo; as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Mr. Stambaugh was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister Laurita Mae Bertrand. Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 130, Cross Plains, TX 76443; or the Cross Cut Cemetery Association or to the Senior Citizens in Cross Plains.
