Cyber Bullying hits close to home.
Bullying has been around for years, but the new cowardly form of Cyber Bullying has hit Eastland County hard this week. This new form of abuse has grown greatly as technology develops nationwide, however, the citizens of Ranger and many of Eastland County are standing firm after the events of this past week. The community of Ranger, Texas has experienced first-hand the devastating outcome of a student being bullied to the point of desperation. Superintendent Mike Thompson from Ranger ISD spoke out regarding electronic device usage saying, “As for individual devices there is a designated time they are allowed to be used”, “They are allowed before lunchtime and before school”, “We can’t control the applications on students devices and I would encourage parents to take five to ten minutes and check their students applications and make sure they are age appropriate”. “Particularly the Burn Book application which is geared to 17 and 18 year olds with parental authority”, “with the Burn Book application it is a very easy to post comments and not be identified.” This type of bullying incident has rendered a local student hospitalized. Recent investigations have determined that an application called Burn Book was one of the major problems leading to this tragedy. The local authorities are investigating the incident as well and the school and community is working on measures to keep this from repeating itself in the future.
