A “pick-six” by the Merkel Badgers early in the first quarter gave the visiting team life as they took a 6-2 lead against the Eastland Mavericks in the season opener for both teams. However, the Mavericks would run off 48 unanswered points over the next 3 ½ quarters to send the Badgers back to Merkel with a 50-6 defeat.
