Norbin Dempsey “N.D.” Smart, age 84 of Gorman, passed away, Friday, February 12, 2016 at Hendrick Hospice Care  in Abilene.

 

Services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016 at the Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel in Gorman with Jerry Smart officiating.  Graveside service will be 2:00 P.M. on Monday at the City of Levelland Cemetery in Levelland, Texas. 

 

N.D. was born July 30, 1931 in Callhan, County, Texas to William Smart and Virginia Elizabeth (Welch) Smart. He married Velma Odessa Sanders on September 11, 1948 in Knox City, Texas.  She preceded him in death in September of 1997.  He later married Louise Baxter on January 17, 1998.

 

N.D. started his career as a 16 year old working for a Levelland farmer.   His first job in the oilfield was helping to change up the Levelland gas plant.  He later worked as a roustabout on a pulling unit for an independent oil company.  He then worked his way up the ranks for 23 years with Marvin Roberts Well Servicing.  When Roberts sold out to Pool Well Service in1973, N. D. went to work for Pool for a  year and a half.  He also served as a contractor for Wheeler Properties  and joined them in 1976. Eventually N. D. became assistant superintended and then superintendent more ten years later.  Besides his oil company duties, he also owned Vintage Music and Variety.  

 

N. D. loved music and enjoyed performing at nursing homes and other functions. He attended the Church of Christ in Gorman.

 

He is surved by his wife, Louise Smart of Gorman; grandsons, Jerry Smart of Winston, Oregon, Jimmie Smart of Redmond, Oregon, and Melvin Smart of Wichita Falls; granddaughter, Amber Kinslow of Sierra Vista, Arizona brother, Bill Smart of Farmington, NM; eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steve Smart, daughter, Venita Smart and two brothers, Delbert Smart and Jesse Smart.
