Lillard J. (Hut) Nelms, 92, died Wednesday, December 23, 2015 in Bridgeport, Texas.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, December 28th 6pm - 8pm at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport. Graveside service is 1:00 pm Wednesday, December 30th at Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco, Texas and will include military honors.
Pastor Dwayne Lamberson will officiate.
L.J. was born April 19, 1923 in Cisco to Larkin Rite and Althea (Alley) Nelms. He married Ella Joe Cone on March 15, 1946 in Cisco.
L.J. served in World War II in the European theater as a SSG in the 71st Infantry. During his tour of duty, he fought in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. Some of his awards include the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on November 1, 1945 from Camp Chaffee Arkansas.
Following his military service, he worked as a Completions Supervisor for Enserch Exploration before retiring after 41 years of service. He is a member of the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport.
L.J. was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Ella Joe; his parents; seven brothers; and eight sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Robert Nelms and wife Shirley of Carrollton, Steven Nelms and wife Elizabeth of Carrollton, Phillip Nelms and wife Jana of Katy, and Joe Wayne Nelms and wife Paige of Decatur; his grandchildren, Amanda, Jenni, Natalie, Lauren, Josh, Kendall, Kainen, Leslie, Devin, Kristin; 13 great-grandchildren; other family members and a host of friends.
